Baltimore, 1966
12-year-old Dara Burke is about to discover that some monsters are real.

It's the summer of 1966, and twelve-year-old Dara Burke has a terrible secret. A secret whispered to her by the little dead boy. Someone is killing the little children in Baltimore.

Small red-headed boys who look a lot like her little brother Alvey.

When a neighborhood boy dies, Dara realizes the shadowy killer is much closer than she'd thought.

As the killer circles his prey, somehow Dara must find a way to save her brother's life . . . and her own!

June, 1969
Black Springs lies in the dark heart of the Shenandoah.
Now, something stirs in that darkness.

It's been three years since the deadly summer of 1966 changed Dara Burke's life forever. Now in high school, she struggles with the consequences from those deadly days, but is determined to enjoy her last summer before senior year. Until her aunt drags her to Black Springs, West Virginia, to attend cousin Isobel's wedding.

Though not happy with the situation—Dara's never even met cousin Isobel and small towns aren't her thing—the teenager rationalizes that she'll only be gone a few days. But when she arrives at Isobel's house in the woods, she feels a deep foreboding such as she hasn't felt for three years.

Then disaster strikes when Isobel's fiance is found murdered in the deep woods. While the police focus on Isobel, Dara knows there's more to the story. Digging deeper, she begins to suspect the terrible secret that lurks beneath the surface of the seemingly idyllic mountain town.

As the line between reality and nightmare blurs, Dara realizes that Black Springs is a place that holds the darkness close. Now, something stirs in that darkness . . . something evil.
